File JHCE: School Based Health Center

In order to provide access to preventive and urgent medical care services and to provide behavioral health service to students for whom they would otherwise be unavailable, M.S.A.D. No. 75 will offer a School Based Health Center at Mt. Ararat High School and Middle School.  The Board believes that this will reduce current health barriers to learning.  The School Based Health Center will work in concert with traditional health and guidance services already in place at the schools.

The School Based Health Center will provide a range of services based on needs determined by community assessments, student and parent satisfaction surveys.  The School Based Health Center Advisory Committee will approve the scope of services.  The Center will follow preventive service guidelines recommended by the American Medical Association (Guidelines for Adolescent Preventive Services) and those recommended by the U.S. Department of Maternal and Child Health (Bright Futures).  It will incorporate a focus on student resiliency and protective factors.

Parent signatures are needed for students less than 18 years of age for general medical services.  The SBHC intends to foster parental involvement in the health care of their children.  Students will always be encouraged to talk to their parents/guardians about confidential concerns.  In accordance with Federal and State Laws, some services may be provided without parental consent.  These services include treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy testing, substance abuse treatment and mental health services.

Medical records at the School Based Health Center are private and confidential by Law.  SBHC records are to be kept in locked cabinets separate from traditional school health records.

A modest annual fee will be charged, but no student will be denied access to services because of inability to pay.
